Radiation Plaque Therapy is the recommended treatment for my type of melanoma. Because it is located in the eye, beneath the retina, this method focus’ the radiation seeds directly at the tumor, effectively killing the cells.
Unfortunately, the radiation also affects good cells. Because of the position of the tumor, I am told I will gradually lose the central part of my vision in the left eye. It will become blurred over the next few years. The effect is permanent.
I am told there is a small percentage that it may not be as bad as expected. Considering the other option with an eye tumor is enucleation (removing the eye), I am glad this is an option.
